Museums in The Hague

The Hague and close region features some thirty museums. Some enjoy international fame, others are less well-known. Art museums such as the Gemeentemuseum and the Mauritshuis add atmosphere to the city, together with the Historical Museum, the Mesdag Museum, Gallery of Prince William V. and many others.

Mauritshuis Den Haag, The HagueMauritshuis
The mansion of Johan Maurits, governor-general of Dutch Brazil, Count of Nassau Siegen, arose in about 1640. The collection consists of masterpieces from the Dutch Golden Age, including paintings by Vermeer, Rembrandt and Potter.

Gemeentemuseum Den Haag
The Gemeentemuseum (municipal museum) owns an extensive collections of modern art, the applied arts, fashion and music. The modern art collection provides an overview of developments in the fine arts since the early 19th century

Museum Bredius Den Haag
Dr. Abraham Bredius was an art historian and art collector as well as director of the Mauritshuis. On his death in 1946, he bequeathed his vast collection of 17-th century art to the city of Den Haag. The museum now features a collection of silver, china and paintings.

Historical Museum Den Haag
The museum is housed in a monumental 17-th century edifice. Numerous paintings and objects from the museum's collection illustrate the history of more than seven centuries of The Hague.

Madurodam
Miniature city Madurodam, all of Holland in just one city. The canal houses of Amsterdam, the Alkmaar cheese market and parts of the Delta Works, all replicated in minute detail on a 1:25 scale. All is set in beautiful gardens.

Museum Het Paleis
It was Prince Hendrik's residence and later Queen Emma's winter palace. Since 1992 the classical, 18th building on the Lange Voorhout has housed regular exhibitions by the Gemeentemuseum that link up with its varied collections.

Panorama Mesdag
Panorama Mesdag is a cylindrical painting, more than 14 meters high and 120 meters in circumference. The Panorama Mesdag is a grand work of art in the style of The Hague School and an important art treasure. The rooms leading to the Panorama house a fine collection of oil paintings and water colours by Mesdag and his wife.
